It’s a new photo magazine, in a market flooded with titles and that’s been losing readers on a yearly base. So i have to admire this newcomer and to see that the editors have placed the bar high enough:
“In 2007 PHOTOICON will develop and expand its experimental origins into 100+ page, full colour, high quality magazine of rare and exclusive interviews and previously unseen archive material. Regular features will incorporate profiles and interviews with the new breed of image makers – yet still salute the masters of the great photographic tradition.”
It’s quite a challenge! I see some resemblances between this magazine and Aperture magazine but in my opinion it’s a good thing, we need more magazines like Aperture and Photoicon, which focus their content more on the art and less on the technique. A magazine that focus on the old but also on the new, that starts new discussions, that interviews great photographers, that is focused on the content and also on how the content is presented. And this magazine is very well printed, believe me when i say this, i don’t remember any other photo magazine that has this kind of printing quality, the color and definition of the photographs are wonderful, almost luxurious.
This issue brings us interviews with the famous czech photographer Jan Saudek and the english photographer Snowdon, along with several articles about exhibitions and books. A great magazine and i hope that it will live up to the promise.
